about BSR

WHY FOCUS ON EXCESSIVE SUGAR CONSUMPTION?

The average American consumes 160 pounds of added sugar per year; people of color consume twice as much, leading to higher incidents of cancer, heart disease, and obesity. These diseases are now affecting us at historically young ages. Our goal is to help consumers make smarter choices, holistically.

our Founder

Shannon's Story

Shannon Sylvain founded Brown Sugar Rehab after her stage IV colon cancer diagnosis at the age of 31. Through research conducted by herself and her physician, Shannon learned that many, if not all, cancers breed and flourish in sugar environments. She also discovered that people of color are affected at higher rates due to lack of education, which ultimately leads to poor choices. Shannon has made it her mission to combat this in a meaningful way.

our Goals

WHAT WE SEEK TO DO

BSR seeks to approach educating communities through a holistic approach, focusing on the following areas:

image

NUTRITION

BSR will consult with a team of nutritionists to find ways to eliminate and replace added sugars in the diet, including teaching us how to shop!

image

ACCESS

BSR seeks to improve access to tools that will empower us to make better choices, including at-home stool sampling kits that can lead to colon cancer detection and genetic testing systems to access disease risk.

image

PREVENTION

BSR will continue our quest to understand how diseases and conditions can be prevented through better lifestyle choices and advocate for corporations to be more transparent in food ingredients.
